Feuerzangenbowle (literally: fire-tongs punch) is a traditional mulled wine drink where, in the preparation, a sugarcone is soaked in rum and ignited so that the molten sugar-rum mixtures drips into the drink. It’s a part of Christmas or New Year’s Eve tradition. The drink is also known as “burnt punch” in many English references.

The “Feuerzangenbowle” at the Isartor (Isar Gate) is the largest in the world. The punch is heated in a 3,40 m high and 2,50 m wide boiler which has been specially manufactured for this seasonal gem.

Thrice every evening fire is set to a huge sugarloaf hanging over the boiler. Such an event and the anticipation of what is to come is of course presented by a moderator and music. There are also food stalls around the “Bowle”, so you can eat between fresh and quite hot replenishments of this quite particular culinary experience.

Being an insider, or about to be, you’ll appreciate the cult movie “Die Feuerzangenbowle”, which runs all the time on a large screen.
